The World of Temperance Rosa Stone. Gallery.

Welcome to The World of Temperance Rosa Stone .

This gallery invites you to return to to a bygone era of English history. A Changing World, 1772–1838 The story of Temperance Rosa Stone did not begin with her birth in 1865. Her family had already lived through generations of extraordinary change. Her great-grandfather William Stone and Mary Dorrington had married in 1788 and lived into the early years of the nineteenth century and Queen Victoria’s reign. During those early years England witnessed revolution across the Channel, the threat of French invasion, Trafalgar and Waterloo, bitter winters and failed harvests, the beginnings of the railway age, the transportation of thousands of convicts to Australia and outbreaks of Typhus, Scarlet fever and the ever present Tuberculosis. By the time Queen Victoria was crowned in 1838, the world into which the Stone family had been born was already disappearing. The following images provide a glimpse of the events and conditions that formed the historical background to the family story that eventually led to the world of Temperance Rosa Stone and revisits the people, streets, alleyways and hidden corners of Victorian London and the City of Bath as they appear in A Cuckoo in the Castle. Some illustrations depict real locations and historical figures, while others bring to life the fictional characters and scenes woven into the novel. Together they form an illustrated companion to the story, allowing you to step beyond its pages and wander once more through Temperance’s remarkable world. With these images I hope to transport you back to another age and invite you to spend a little longer in Temperance’s company.
